Bit of a newbie Electronics Q

Hi people.
First post.
I've been pretend ribing in a yam 3.3, 15hp for past 3 years.(20knt so can't complain).
Anyway I'm about to take delivery of Narwhal 4m 25hp 4 stroke EFI Electric Start, 2 seat sofa & console & I'm wetting myself with excitment.

However I'm a complete gadget freak.
Iv'e already got a Garmin map/sounder on the way.
And I'm thinking of adding a waterproof stereo, kettle, searchlight etc, you get the idea.
Unfortunetly, having never had a battery onboard before, I'm clueless about whether this is possible.

Q. Will I be able to wire up any 12v thingy to the battery.?

Q. Can I add some of those cigeate lighter thingy's.?

Q. Can I take for granted the battery will charge from the running motor or do I need to tell the dealer I want some specific kind of battery/alternator etc.?

Q. How long will say a GSMAP run from battery if engine if off. Or rather will it run for say 2 hours with no negitave consequences.?

Q. Does the battery charge even in netural idol.?

Cheers for any help.

Gary

Yes, you can wire up directly to the battery.

Q. Can I add some of those cigeate lighter thingy's.?

Yes, but you might not use it as much as you think.

Q. Can I take for granted the battery will charge from the running motor or do I need to tell the dealer I want some specific kind of battery/alternator etc.?

Yes, it will charge the battery.

It should be okay for 2 hours, no problem.

Q. Does the battery charge even in netural idol.?

It should do, but its a non-issue in practice.

Yes, assuming we're not talking about something that draws hundreds of amps (well, actually, you could wire it up; probably wouldn't work, though.)

Yes. Get good quality ones. The cheapies don't last too long near salt water.

It will be rigged to charge from the motor.

Just chartplotter? Quite a while. I'd figure on something like 24 hours without too much trouble. You can get the operational draw from the manufacturer, and the amp/hour rating for the battery. Then do the math.

The battery will *probably* charge at idle speeds. Some motors don't put out enough voltage at idle, though. A voltmeter across the terminals should give you a hint as to what yours is doing.
