Bright medium size torch for boat kit.

Looking to upgrade my non-waterproof torch.

Needs to run on AA (ideally) or AAAs... don't want rechargeable. LED. Waterproof or water resistant. Conventional "tube" shape and around 120mm long (150mm absolute max) so it will fit in a pocket.

Don't want to spend more than £25 and nearer £10 would be great.

Here is an example of the type of thing... but no mention of it being waterproof though.

Personally I'd go for a cheap divers backup torch preferably plastic. I use an LED diving torch with lithium AA batteries.

Surefire are very good but expensive, I have a couple of small gun lights which I use on Air rifles only 3" long and about 1.25" diameter but very powerful, I didnt realise they made hand torches too, will have a look for them on line.

As I said above too much choice and so many varying specs/attributes. Then I remembered I didn't want it to shine across the channel or take it into space and the most important things for me were... AA batteries so that I keep all my portable devices on the SIB to the same battery type.... properly waterproof not just spashproof... rugged plastic body... keep to under £25 posted.

So I bought this Unilite....

Just about met my 150mm length requirement at 165mm... waterproof to 30m... shockproof in 1m drop... 150m beam... 4x AA batteries... cree bulb... 2 modes ON or SOS... button lock so it doesn't come on in a bag or pocket... 7hr battery life when on or 35hr in SOS mode... decent size lanyard.

Normally £25+ with postage but found a guy selling one he'd never opened/used at £15 inc post so a good deal.

Comes with O-ring grease showing they're taking the waterproofing seriously.

One more small thing sorted for the 2017 season.

I have a couple of Surefires of different types/sizes. Lovely pieces of kits, very nicely made, but very expensive. And I do think now there's many other options out there that maybe weren't around 10+ years ago. And pretty much all the Surefires will need CR123 Lithium batteries (or rechargeable equivalents), and won't run on standard AA's.

I always have one or two Surefires in my pocket for night nav exercises, but given the cost don't think I'd permanently leave them on the boat!

I have an Exposure Joystick for cycling but like to take it with me on the boat or camping. It's the older version with 375 lumens and while some of these cheap Chinese Cree lights are supposed to be 10,000 lumens mine is as good. The new ones are waterproof (mine isn't).
