I have a new PLB as the old one has now passed its battery life, (and cost of battery replacement makes it a better option to buy a new one) so question is what is best method of disposing of old PLB ?

WEEE regulations suggest the supplier of the new unit should have taken the old one back.
I guess you need to inform the MCA

Sell it on ebay. someone will pay more than the postage - either because they can (or believe they can) change the battery cheaper than published prices or because they are willing to take a punt on it working for another few years anyway. BUT as above make sure you tell MCGA.
