Electronics theft??

Hi,

As I flush mounted my very expensive new Lowrance head unit I realized that it's only held in by a few screws. It wouldn't take somebody more than a few seconds with a power driver to get it out. It's in a metal dash panel that is just screwed down. How often does that happen? I don't live in a high crime area, actually the opposite, but the boat travels and I am wondering if I should take any more precautions. The only one think I can think of it to use the security type screws that you see in public facilities. The torx or allen heads with the little post in the middle. That would slow them down. it would also mean that I have reduced access as well. Only an issue if I forget to bring a bit along and have electrical troubles out at sea.

Assuming you're talking about a panel screwed to the console, make a few of the screw holes through-holes. and use a screw and nylock (or other lock nut), tightened enough to be snug, but not such that you can uncrew it without a wrench inside (nylon washers would help if the inside surface is grippy.)

Should make it hard enough that they'll move onto something easier.
