Engine interferring with VHF set

I need some help to try and sort out a problem. I have a 60 hp Etec which interfers with both the H/H VHF and the Fixed VHF. It sounds like a HT crackle on boath sets.

Any thoughts

When does it do it? ie when you apply throttle, when you put the ignition on etc?

If you're picking up the RFI from the spark plug wires, I recall that going to resistor plugs or/and wires cuts down the current flow and limits the RFI. Not really sure I'd go playing with a motor that's working well, but there you go.

Might also make sure you've got a good solid ground to the VHF, and the shield to the antenna cable is well connected to the unit.

My h/held (ICOM)packs up at anything over tickover unless the squelch is at max , but I only intend to use it if the engine stops ! At any revs I cant hear anything coz of the wind noise anyway .
