Fish Finder

I have a faulty Garmin 90 with a in hull transducer on my 4.8m RIB,
The screen is flush mounted on the console.
What's the best replacement to fit in the same place?
And should I position the transducer on the transom rather than in the hull?
Thanks
Shaun

If you're happy with a fishfinder, then it'd be worth giving Garmin a call as they normally do a recon unit for less than retail.

As for mounting, both positions should work equally as well, although I prefer transom, my customers seem to prefer in hull though.

Through hull transducer mount in a RIB?
Interesting.
Any pics?
No problem while trailerling?

Don't confuse "through hull" with "in hull".
A through hull transducer is bonded to a suitable spot inside the hull & "shoots through" the hull, I.e it sees through the hull. An "in hull" requires a hole drilling in the hull & the transducer is fitted in the hole. Through hull txs can offer better performance over traditional transom mount txs imo.

Thanks for your point of clarification.
So, through hull in your opinion is better than transom mount even though transducer is not in water and has wood and fiber below! Maybe due to propeller vibration?

Maybe in hull would be best of all three?

Question is when can transducer be able to perform through hull? Any special qualityfor that (except physical shape to be able to grap on floor)? Any chrip can work ?

The area that the transducer is bonded to needs to be solid GRP, no wood, fibre, foam or air spaces. A maximum thickness of around 12mm is usually recommended. The water flow over the area needs to be undisturbed & away from any chimes or strakes. The advantage is that you can mount it forward of the engine away from any turbulence. It's also protected from damage. I use an M260 transducer which is specifically for the purpose, but you can use transom mount transducers & bed them into epoxy.

Thank you.
Factory (in china) havenot started with the hull of my boat. Will ordering a hatch in the floor will get me easier chance to have through hull transducer?

I have an 8" Bailey hatch in the deck near the stern for accessing the transducer. You will also need some way if getting the transducer cable from the txr to the console. I had a small under deck conduit glassed in specifically for it, don't forget the size of the plug on the transducer cable.

Near the stern? Meaning in the center above the keel or more to side?
Asking this because usually keel has wood not only fiber i guess, and that would interfer with transducer as you mentioned.
Any pictures by the way?

You could upgrade with a better model and cut the hole a bit bigger. I've never had any problems using external mount transducers on the stern, I'm able to view bottom in 600m + and still maintain bottom in 300m at speeds of 40kmh.

That all depends on the internal layout of the hull, without knowing where the stringers & bulkheads are, it's impossible to say. How's your Mandarin[emoji848]

I had an issue with a Lowrance hds 8 not communicating with point 1 ariel, due to the fact my hds was no longer able to be repaired they gave me the offer of a hds9 gen 3 or pay a small amount to go to the hds 12.
