Fitting Garmin Striker Plus 4 & transducer

Hi all,

Finally got myself a Garmin, not for charts as such as I have Navionics on my phone and that does us ok, but I needed something for depth finding after not-too-subtly destroying our prop by a nice peaceful beach. I think we woke a few people up with the sound!!

Anyway - fitting it. I guess I'm being cautious about drilling through the transom! Should I go over the transom rather than through it? Pros/cons?

Where exactly should I attach the transducer? We live nowhere near water for testing/measuring or whatever, and I have to do it this weekend as it's heading off to storage next week.

Bit scary taking a drill to my pride & joy but needs must!

Cheers all

I would say over rather than through. You can get cable protector and p clips to fix it set just above hull height as far away from prop as reasonable or the wash will ruin signal. But as above, if you have a well much better bedded in there.

Good thinking guys! Does it matter which side of the engine it goes? I'm sure I read once that it has to go on the.....right hand side??

Yes there is a bilge well in the centre of the deck at the back by the transom - no pump just a bung, which I'm sure is there specifically for me to forget to put in when we launch!

What about running the wire back to the console? Is it ok to loosely cable tie to the engine power/fuel line/nav lights?

Yes I believe starboard is preferred. My boat was twin engined [emoji854]
Ideally fixed independently I’d say. Things have a way of working loose on a boat. Your boat your call though!

Yes but needs to be bonded to hull with sealant and no air bubbles. Loads of stuff about this on the google. Preferable imho than making holes [emoji33]

Hi citygent, decided not to sell your Europa?

As already said, I'd go up and over or bond it within the bilge.

If you don`t want to drill transom CT1 a block to transom and screw transducer to that, you can also fit P clips with a blob of CT1.

Think I'm going to screw it in place - hope this photo helps! Do you guys think A or B? There are small chines back there so I tried to choose a spot between them. A seems a bit low but B seems high!!!

Either really, although prefer B as further from prop.

Similar position on both our little ribs. Both seem to hold bottom well even at full chat.

I’d go B. The transducer doesn’t want to be too deep.

My transducer is fitted as chipko's 2nd picture because that's the only place it would fit due to the transom wheel brackets. Works well, never had a problem.

Mickter spoke about using CT1 earlier - I've bought some Sikaflex 291i Marine Sealant - will this be ok to secure the p-clips?

Yes that’ll work fine.

ID:	142332I bought a 1" thick black @ 4" square perspex block from ebay . Screwed it for the transducer then fixed it to the transom with VHB tape . Similar kits are available for the job but seemed very expensive (it's a Yorkshire thing) held solid for a couple of seasons now with no issues.
Excuse the poor quality of the image as the boat's currently tipped off the trailer onto some carpet.
