garmin 160 fishfinder

do fishfinders give a true picture of the fish under the boat or is it just a con. we went out at weekend and moved around and saw loads of fish on the screen so stopped as soon as we did the fish dissapeared , we even cought fish that wernt showing, then when set off again the fish start to show.

They do show fish or shoals of fish however the sonar works on reflecting a signal from them and it can be confused by seaweed or in fresh water thermoclines.

We seem to get fish indicated when slowing down caused by bubbles from the prop.
