Garmin 238 Sounder

Hi,

I seem to be having problems with my Garmin, it never seems to pick up anything from tide stations. I search for the tide stations, select one... and then get a screen saying "waiting...". Anyone had the same or similar problems before?

Thanks

Ben

Yeh, mine's the same. The early versions of Mapsource, I believe, didn't contain the info.

Will the update from the garmin website fix the problem?

Dunno. My understanding is that I'll need to get the update software and buy a new coupon code to unlock it. Bu**er that.

Now you've got me started.. I actually think the cartography upgrade should be free or minimum cost. Mostly the maps are more complete than previously - or - previously Garmin's cartography was incomplete, which is the way I view it. Changes to the chart, because of changes around the coast, I'm happy to pay for.

Certainly for the 182 you need to have the current software to get tidal info. The earlier versions did not support this part of the unit. Try updating to the latest version from Garmin and see what happens, mine worked fine once I had done this.

Anyone know where to get the pc connection kit from?

I have seen it online for about $60 in the US, but they wont deliver to uk... Looking in the uk, its £60

Just wondering if theres a cheaper place ?

Thanks

Ben

You don't need a connection kit, just solder a 9 pin serial connector to the NMEA outputs and plug in, connection details are on the website about how to connect and set up.
Alternatively you buy a spare lead and keep set up to plug into a 12v battery and laptop for updates for around £21 (or free if you have a spare cable like I did) and ten minutes work.

I think that this is a different kind of upgrade that actually upgrades the unit rather than the software......but I am willing to be proven wrong.

Just updated by the looks of it as the date for the upgrades are March 23rd 2005.

Hope that helps.

I keep my 182 updated with the latest software after having some problems with the tide tables, on checking I found that the software in my brand new unit was several updates out of date!

Yeh the Unit OS software and the Mapsource software have got confused in this thread. I have the latest OS software installed (there's a bug in it but that's another story) but I still can't read tide tables and my understanding is as I said previously, the tide tables are not in the early versions of Mapsource. You can get the later Mapsource CD FOC but It'll need unlocking.
