I had a similar issue with a 555, try a factory reset, press and hold one of the buttons when you power on, can't remember which one so may have to google it. Mine only ever did it once and was fine after reset.

Water may be shorting out the switch contact which means there may be more salt water inside the unit, i would try and open it up( dont if it is still in warranty) to clean and dry it out.
Any salt water in there will cause massive corrosion problem on the PCB and unit will eventually fail completely.

if its fails outside of its warranty, garmin will, for 105quid supply you with a factory reconditioned unit in exchange for yours. ive just had to do that with mine

Garmins exchange program is a bit of a lottery, I did it with my 555 and on my third one now as the others had faulty GPS receivers.

Don't let that put you off, they are very good about swapping them over.

I wouldn't open it up at all, whether in warranty or out of. Send it to Garmin and let them deal with it. My 5 yr old 5xxs was replaced foc.

Just rang them, explained the fault, they said send it, after a couple of days they said they couldn't recreate the fault (sounder faults are difficult to test in a lab), they said they'd send a refurbished one foc, it arrived the next day, it fixed the problem.

They only bit that looked refurbished was the packaging :-)

Nice
