Garmin Streetpilot without map card?

So, all you Garmin gurus out there, what happens if you turn one of them on without the map card?

The reason I ask is I am looking for a cheap remote antenna capable GPS with a data out, ideally with the big round data connector on the back. Doesn't need to be waterproof, and as the street pilots seem to tick the boxes and sell for pennies on fleabay (presumably because the maps are so out of date), I am thinking one of these might be a cheap means to an end.

So, Anyone got one they could pull the card out, switch on & tell me if it functions like a '72 (i.e waypoints, trails & "you are here" on a blank "map") or does it just not want to play?

(as an aside If anyone has a GPS12CX, 12XL, III+ or V gathering dust in a corner somewhere I'd pay a bit more for them as I could also use them on the rib......)
