Handheld scope

Has anyone used one of the small handheld oscilloscopes and, if so, are they any good?

I need to find out what is happening with the lighting coils on my engine, but don't want to get something that has any limitations or fundamentally flawed.

You can find out all you need to know with a decent multimeter.

I know the coils work but the tachometer wire is actually connected to the lighting circuit (designed like that) and it needs some form of adapter (i.e., An Expensive Thing) to get a tacho to work.

I'm guessing that it is full-wave rectified but it might be smoothed - too smoothed to drive the tachometer.

An inductive pickup might do the job.
