just to say that my comments about ICOMs are only positive. I've been using these units for the last 15 years. None has failed, I've dropped them in water (some were not water proof either) and still worked, had them as fixed units on all of my boats and never had a problem.
I don't know what would have happened if one went wrong but so far everything has been 100% (the old ones too)
I feel they are pretty good piece of kit.

Agreed but not bomb proof. This particular one was in my rucksack along with a packet of chocolate biccies. A certain ribnet owner from Surfhampton (who is renouned for breaking Icoms) found said biccies and ate half for his breakfast, didn't put the lid back on the tin, then left the rucksack in the car during a hot summers day. Result chocolate covered Icom. oh then we dropped it twice, so funnily enough it doesn't work anymore.
Now how good is Icoms warranty ?

Well we don't claim them to be bomb or in that fact chocci proof!

It is fair to say you have not look after it too well!!!!

Jon,
I had my old radio linked into just the Tx from my plotter for position info (the Rx for the same channel was the input from the sounder) I see that my Garmin 182 on the latest software has athe capability to link into the VHF for DSC info, so if I connect both the Tx and Rx from the radio into the plotter will I get all the extra functions from the 421 including the position appearing on the plotter?

No is the simple answer.
Only the M601 has this function in our current line up, sorry.

So if I connect the VHF Rx to the plotter Tx again thats all I need? I don't really want to use the second NMEA channel on the plotter if I don't need to as I have other plans for it.
As long as I get a position fed into the VHF for the DSC functions thats fine, anything else would just be a bonus

OK, found by experiment the 421 will only accept NMEA with BOTH wires connected, PITA but OK I spose.

You should only need NMEA out + from the Garmin abd ground.
If memoery serves that should be the blue and black wire.
Which 2 have you conected?

Talked to Raymarine at boats show and they said the GDMSS alert feature that Jon mentioned a while ago where the position of the alert flags up on the chartplotter works with the new 'C' series units not my 530+ as its an HSB2

My Garmin has one channel with Brown/Blue (Blue is Tx out)
And the other with Green/White (can't remember offhand which one is which at mo)
When I had the silva fitted I used the Brown only from the sounder input and the blue only as the output to the VHF with the 2nd channel switched off. I intended to eventually use this to link to a Magnetometer (when I have the £2k to buy it)
I found last night that connecting the Icom the original way didn't work, nor with one wire on the second channel, it would only take a position with both wires connected (+ and -). So it is now connected to channel 2 with both wires.
I am not worried about it too much, I can't afford the magnetometer for a long while yet

Well, those nice chaps at Icom seemed to have fixed it. After removing the chocolate and cleaning up the contacts it turns out that the radio is perfectly serviceable.
So how good is Icoms warranty ? the service is excellent, thank you.
{astonishingly as it sounds, it seems there are some things that can survive an incounter with a rogue wave }
