Icom IC-M421 problems

I have an Icom IC-M421 and it has given no problems since fitting 3 years ago but recently it is playing up. Sometimes when it is switched on it is fine then after some time it will start beeping and at this point it just wont do anything, it appears to go into tx mode but although it displays tx on the screen it actually doesn't transmit. There are other times when it wont scan OR it wont go to ch16 when you try to select it and again when this happens it won't transmit. I am hoping this is not a case of water ingress as the unit is mounted on the console and is exposed. I can't find a reset procedure for this model so I presume it's not available.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No idea with the particular set but having got a few amateur VHFs wet over the years, it sounds like the sort of thing they tend to do when they get a bit damp inside.

Any sign of condensation inside the display, or green stuff in the back of the antenna socket if you pull the plug off?

Sorry, I cannot help with the specifics, although it does sound like the control functions are screwed up. What I can say is that when I had problems with my 421 I found Icom very helpful, and the repair was turned around quickly.

No condensation but defo a bit of green stuff on the SO239 and the phono so it probably is moisture related - I'm pretty certain it's the on/off/volume switch that's at fault so looks like I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and remove it.

Thanks anyway.

When I last spoke to ICOM repairs about my handheld they were most helpfull.

Worth asking them the question.
