I had to cut and solder the strips myself, these are pre-made. You just might have to splice the wires if you want longer spans between units.

I'm actually going to do what you did. Last week I bought a 5 meter roll of 5050 "waterproof" (IP65) LED's and I'm going to cut them up. I paid $1.68 (including shipping) for the roll off ebay...I figured I could afford to lose $1.68 if they don't work...but I heard even if you buy them from a US seller, they're buying them from the same place in China/Hong Kong. When they arrive (18 day shipping estimate), I'll add some pictures for everyone of putting them together. I'm thinking: solder, black 5200, covered in adhesive heat shrink.
So, you said groups of 3 are plenty bright? The plan was going to do a test strip of 3 and then decide how long to make each run.
