Kill cord

Hello. New to boats.
I have just bought a ribtec 6m with a yanmar Diesel engine. Before I put it in the water I'd like to fit a killcord. There is a stop button on the control panel which sends power to a solenoid on the engine, how do I wire a kill cord into this? Thanks for looking

Does it "send" power to the solenoid, or cutoff the power to the solenoid?

Hi poly
When you press the button it sends a live feed to the solenoid, which pulls a lever and cuts the engine. When you let go button the solenoid springs back again.
What I would like to do is fit the killcord and switch to momentarily send a feed in the same way. This is where I'm stuck!

Yanmar engines in RIB's generally use Mercury Marine controls unless its the basic morse controls In any case there will be a kill switch already fitted you obviously just don't have the lanyard. In anycase if there is not one they are simple to fit but I will be very suprised if one is not there!

What engine do you have , the 4lh sends power the solenoid an 6lp cuts the power . Only problem with 4lh the solenoid doesn't like constant power as it burn it out .

Sorry just read it correctly by the sounds of it you have the 4lh . You need to wire the kill switch in reverse . Ie when cords attached no power is sent .

Except for the issue that Yam Man mentions that if left disconnected for long time the solenoid will burn out?

You can wire a say quicksilver dash mount kill switch in, as I was saying when you have moored up a release the kill cored the solenoid will be engaged until the battery isolater is switch off . Your have to adopt a system like leave the killed cored attached , switch the isolated off the then remove killed cord .
