Looking for a GPS

nothing insane, my RIB isn't that big, can't be doing with reading charts forever and fancy a bit of technology experience.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

RIBase
Garmin Etrex hand-held GPS starts at £100+, and is perfect for speed, direction and waypoints (exact locations). Does what I need it for. For an extra £25 you can add a marine mount.

Define your budget - and exactly what you want from it - that would be a good start.

I would have to recommend some of the Garmin range - good quality & good charts . I went for the ' full on ' 276c & have been very very impressed , but reckon the smaller hand held jobs are just as good and not as expensive - sometime comes up second hand cheap. I bet there are member son here that have a lot mor experiance & probably do a good deal if you want new . or wait a few weeks & try some out at the boat show in Southampton. No connection to GArmin , but always used them in aircraft for years , then the car , then the boat. I thinksome people have had odd problems but I think that may be the same for all manufacturers .

ON my small boat I wanted something independant of main power in case I 'lost' the electrics & I often leave the boat at anchor so wanted something removable. I can also plan / plot / play with it at home when its raining!

Send a message via MSN to zodiacman
you are better off spending an extra £50 and get one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GPS-garmin-etr...d=p3286.c0.m14you can then add charts on the on to the memory card. Ive used one and they are great. I use it with blue chart atlantic for the boat and then just swap card to topo GB and use it for cycling and walking. and its waterproof too

I know that here in Canada, Garmin has been offering the topographic mapping software (Topo Canada) as part of a package with units like the 60CSx and the 76 CSx. When you factor in the now included software, the prices of these units have come way down in the past year.

The Atlantic Bluecharts CD with one unlock code inclusive (for standard area size which, taking the channel area as an example, will cover Thames round to the Scillies - UK and French side of channel) will cost about the same again depending where you shop. Quite a bit of chart for your money compared with the paper versions.

Also, the above comes with a PC app that allows you to view the charts on the PC and do all the waypoint/track/route management and download to the handheld units.

ian - they are good for the £. but bare in mind you can't upload maps/charts so its a fairly good uk base map only. also a very small screen. no doubt, being lowrance, the manual will be no use at all. but for a very low cost gps they are good (i have played with pne and now own its bi brother with chart option etc).

seems to have a good battery life too , ideal to have in a pocket on a small boat to look at speed and distance etc and the simple basemap is more than the etrex etc has for similar money . Nearest garmin looks like the GPS 72 for another tenner or so .

I got a Garmin blue chart CD with unlock codes off E bay about 6/7 moths ago
i think it was about £20
The man then sent me all the unlock codes for the north atlantic english channel and many others a waste realy.
I think they took him off ebay
but what he sold works fine no bugs and it was upto date.
