Lowrance HDS8

Looking at a possible US trip in a couple of weeks so thought I might grab a chartplotter whilst out there to fit to TB2...

Does anyone have the HDS8 and how does it perform and compare to the older LCX units?

We have the HDS 10 and sidescan and its brilliant.

Hi Chris

I fitted a HDS8 + Structure Scan to my rib a few months ago, and I'm absolutely stunned how good it actually is.

I can't comment how it compares to the LCX units, as my previous fish finder (before some scrote nicked it, along with nearly 6k of my diving equipment...) was a Raymarine DX500 (not a shabby unit in its own right), but it pales into the shadows by comparison.

I believe the units from the US are restricted to using feet & degrees 'F', it may be worth doing some further digging.

Anyway hope that helps

Andy

I have an HDS unit and an older LCX fitted on my RIB.
The HDS is very flexible and has both Structure scan and music routed through it, however the chart display on the LCX units is clearere and more paper like plus updatyes and zooms better.
If they put the LCX display on with the HDS features it would be perfect!

Not unless they changed since coming out with the HDS system.

From the HDS-8 manual:

Units
Controls the unit of measure used for a variety of
data, ranging from distance and speed to heading and
barometric pressure. To access the Units menu, select
Units from the Settings menu and press enter.
To change a unit of measure:
1. Select a unit from the Units menu. Press
enter.
2. Select the a unit of measure and press
enter.

Unfortunately, that doesn't express exactly what your choices are for units, but I would doubt they limited it to feet/miles/Fahrenheit, as the North American version would also be sold in Canada, where metric is used.
