M421 Flush Mount Template

Jon - how come the flush mount template provided in the manual for the M421 is completely wrong?! It’s the old version for the M401 and therefore fairly useless. The dimensions on the diagram are correct for the M421 but the diagram itself doesn't match those dimensions.

I have just made one for myself - it’s on my website if anyone wants it. Make sure you don't have any page scaling on when you print it out. Download Here

Mine came with an Eratum slip. Look for a bit of pale yellow paper in the box.

The dimensions in the book are correct but the printed "hole" is wrong.
Mark it out to the dimensions given and you will be OK. Luckily the template is too small and can be made larger. Imagine if they printed the 601 template.

We were made aware of this just be for Christmas.
All dealers should be aware of it by now and advising accordinly.

As stated there is an extra sheet in all M421 boxes now advising of correct sizing.

It is also on our website as a download.

Funny thing is of all the M421 that have been sold since September we have only recived a small number of phone calls regarding this from end users!

Hope it did not cause to much of a drama for you.

Regards

Cost of flush mount brackets?

Was very pleased with the cost of the M421 bought at the boat show but looked in the box and no flush mount brackets included!

Had to buy these as a separate item that cost £23!!!!! two pieces of bent stainless and some machine screws.

I think that if the dashboard bracket is included in the box then so should the flush mount kit.

What has everyone else been paying?

Well if we included it we would have to make them out of cheap and nasty plastic like some people do and they would not last!

Mind you I aware aware it is possible to cut and use the bracket supplied as a flush moount kit.
Lot of boat builders do it, so I understand!

Of course I can not recomend it myself!!!!!

Only wasted a few sheets of paper and a trip to the garage. No little yellow sheet in my box - can't find it on the web either. Doesn't matter though.

I'm using my old M401 flush mount brackets, but I think I paid around £20 for them a few years back.

Jon - I have tried downloading the M421 PDF docs off the ICOM site from uni and home and they keep being reported as corrupt (leaflet and manual).

If Searider had to pay £23 for a product with a RRP of £17.63, thoses comparisons are worth diddly.

Add to these prices the time and fuel to go back to the dealer (30 mile round trip in my case) when you find out that there isn't a flush mount kit in the box and this turns into this .

It would seem to be and always been the case not to supply them as standard by a vast number of radio companies.

Only two I know of that do "give" it away and what they give away is not the same as our "bit of bent metal"

IMHO £23 does seem a bit odd, I would not expect to pay over the SRP.

Flush vs. Bracket Mount

Jon,

Do you sell many flush mount kits? Or do most people fit their radios on the bracket?

I accept that if the vast majority of people fit their radios on the bracket then this should be included in the box and the flush mount kit considered a "specialist" extra.

I would have thought that most people flush mount though?

How about supplying without either mounting kit and then choosing the one you want either included in the price or at extra cost for all.

Anyway, when all's said and done the radio looks good, I can now fit it, but feel a bit peeved at the retailer.

The bent pieces of stainless do, actually, look quite good

Regards

Hi Duncan

I have done a rough calculation based on M421 sales and flush mount sales for the last 3 months.
This is only a very rough guide.

From this it would indicate less than 15% flush mount the radios using the MB69.

I am pleased you are happy with the unit, I hope it serves you well.

Regards

Jon

Pumkin quoted £21 at the show when I bought my 421 @ £210. Thats 10% of the radio cost!
Perhaps they were making up for exceeding Icoms wonderful LBS discounts.

The other reason I did not get the flush kit was that I want to I want to make a good seal between the dash and the radio, to stop water getting inside the console. Its a shame the front panel/case gasket does not extend over the back of the flange.
{Edit} I would have gladly paid the £21 if a gasket had been included in the kit.

P.S. Sent my registration form off today, dont forget yours for the extra 2 years peace of mind.

Looked in the box at lunchtime today. little yellow bit of paper with a few rectangles drawn on it! When i sum the courage to hack into my console ill be sure to use the right one!

As for flush mounting kit, i got the whole lot from Ocean Safety with a discount because we do work with them, needless to say im very pleased with a good looking product and a healthy discount on the RRP.

Thanks.
Zippy.
