Managed to start it today for the first time. On a sack trolly.
Jeez that's a lump to pull.
I don't think it had been started for about 2 months and was drained of fuel .
I think I'm going to have to find a sweet spot to start it. It was not bad but took about 12 pulls it started then stopped all the time I think I need too get the choke and revs right.and understand it more.
BTW. I'm not a young pup and it was difficult pulling it at the angle on the sack trolley.

You’ll struggle to pull start a Mariner 40hp. I used to have a Yamaha 40V and it was a lump alright. Think about making a wooden outboard motor stand if you have space and a garage.

Yes I have space in the shed but can't use water in there .it would probably be OK on the boat because its not so high up.
As long as it doesn't kick back and break My wrist

Appreciate you can't use muffs to run it in the shed - not to mention not wanting to gas yourself - but could you use a plastic container of some sort filled with water to the appropriate depth & run the engine in that?

Fill container with a hose & empty with a syphon (or even a drain tap)

Used plastic barrels are cheap on ebay, cut to suitable height.

Re switch. you could probably pretty much fit any stop switch, e.g. even one off a 2hp yamaha/mercury/mariner :

https://www.bhg-marine.co.uk/yamaha-...ton-3974-p.asp

Or maybe this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374234898616

It's small, discrete, waterproof, only activates while you push it, so won't get knocked and accidentally turn the motor off where a toggle switch or "cap" type lanyard would (assume you have an actual kill cord on the remotes).

You'd need to check the wiring diagram on your motor to see if this could wire alongside your existing kill cord or find somewhere else, or maybe even you need a different switch (Normally open vs normally closed). Either way, hopefully this is a starter for 10..

Matt thanks again.
I looked at the wiring and it seems there is 2 extra wired connections branching of the stop / switched cables.
So yes this seems like a good option and I'm going down that route.
I'm also getting an electric start fitted.
Think it's going to cost in the region of £200. All in .
including parts.
I'm not bothered about the choke or in gear solonoids.
Just a straight start from the battery to the switch to the outboard.
It has already the ring gear and charging system.
It won't be done just yet because of work commitments.
But once done il send on the pics.
Hopefully without any problems.
