My Rev Counter is..........

.........sticking !

Well, it's been a while since I last posted, but I reminisce with fondnes about the good times, great banter and good friends I've made on this forum, who I still meet with and chat to off site till this day.

I've just purchased a new toy - I'll post pictures shortly - however, here I am asking for advise already - the tacho is sticking - it seems to set itself at 5000 reves when the ignition / engine is off, but when it fires us it bounces all over the place in no particular fashion - any thoughts.

I'd hooked up to a Mercury 115 OB 4 stroke, 2009 - the speedo and all other instruments work just fine.......hoping it's a minor issue ;-)

............nice to be back.

......ps........done the setting thing on the back - read that in another post, but still it's a little off balance.

Banter aside those things count alternator pulses (unless it;s a really new one on a data cable?)

5K when powered off doesn't sound right. Some will "park" at a K or so, and should when power is applied with engine off drop to zero. Does it do that?

If so, bouncing all over the place might just be a loose connection, but with the 5K "park" position I have the nagging feeling it might be gubbed. Can you get / borrow another tacho to test it with? - That would at least rule out a wiring issue.

Back to the banter......

Borrowing another rev counter is a superb idea before investing in another or further expensive diagnostics - thanks.

Analogue Rev counters can "stick" if they are left for long periods. Honda gauges are known for this.
