Agreed, but the more likely scenario is the crawl back to port on the aux with no charging at 4-ish Knots..... Use as an anchor light is a secondary bonus.

I'd rather keep some battery in reserve for the VHF

My RIB has about 900mm between lights. The Red and Green have a flat plate on the A frame about 300 mm below the top. Using a 600mm S/S pole this takes the distance between all round white and R/G to 900mm. Just short.

I did have a bigger plastic pole on it but one lunch time in Seahouses harbour, I came back to find it dangling by the wires. I never did find out how it happened.

Is an RYA examiner going to be pedantic about the exact distance on a RIB?

i doubt it, though it would be nice to see people at least making an effort! i didnt know about the rule on height difference until around 12months after i built the frame! im just going to raise the white light rather than lowering the red and green.

I thought the 1m separation was the whole reason you get white all-rounders on a stalk to give the extra height?

I was offered this by Osprey but air draft is important at one of my launching sites, I don't use it at night much anyway and nobody here will give a monkeys about light separation so I went for the low profile option.

Mine are on one switch, IIRC the first position does the white, and the second position the white and red/greens.

Our ARW is on a pole above the A-Frame to give the 1m seperation.

If we did have height issues, the pole is bolted onto the top of the a-frame, so we can always remove it if we had to.

Lastly, our running lights and ARW are switched seperately.

i thought those were intended for use on a tender / sib where you wont get a frame fitted and where you dont need to show red/green

Or to clear something on the cabin roof on a crusier (e.g. radar pod, antenna base), or to put it that bit higher for any reason you might need a few inches of elevation......

Can also be used on rib A frames to give 1m separation!


In the not too distant future i'll have two ARWs as mentioned above. the one on the 0.5m pole will fold!
