New boat electronics

Morning all,

We're just about to place an order for a new boat. They originally specced it with a Garmin Echomap 50s, but I need something that uses Navionics charts because they are the only ones Lough Derg in Ireland (our sumerhols spot). They've come back with a Raymarine A67 for the same money. It looks a decent unit and has the option for hooking up NMEA data from the engine. Does anyone have an experience with these? Pros/cons?

Cheers.

New boat electronics

I've got the A68 which is the same unit but with added chirp sounder - its a great bit of kit & easy to use & update etc. The only (minor) drawback is that with hindsight I may have opted for the slightly larger display of the A78 (they also have 9" & 12" displays too).

But it's a great bit of kit.

Go for the largest screen your new boat will take.
You wont regret it.

BTW what will your new boat be?

I know... quite giddy tbh. Mil grey tubes with treadmaster wear patches. Was going to go for black GRP but I think white is probably a more sensible option.

Roll on next season.

Nice one you could get a 12" stand up one like mine
I wouldn't bother with touch screen no good when wet.

Wow, going for the plunge with a brand spanking new boat

Don't think I could trust myself with a brand new boat

Don't the Garmin plotters come with the worldwide maps built into them?

I'm not going to actually use it! It's for looking at.

They do, but Garmin still don't have coverage of Irish inland waterways. The Raymarine seems to have a bunch of spiffy features that the Garmin doesn't too. The touchscreen part is the only bit I'm unsure on.

Anyone else experienced this? It would seem to be a bit of a deal breaker in an open boat. Ovey?

My Lowrance HDS touch seems to work wet. But that's drips from hands and suits. Not wet like UK wet.

I know its not the same league but I abandoned my plan to use my phone with the memory map app as a backup plotter when I tried to phone someone in the rain and it started dialling random numbers in my phone book after scrolling to random locations...

granted I would hope a plotter would have overcome that bearing in mind its intended usage...

I haven't had a problem with the touch screen, and it's definitely been wet! It's behaved perfectly so far. As I said earlier its a great bit of kit & even as a 6" display I can see both chart and sonar displays easily, but I may be inclined to go for a 7" or 9" display if I had the choice again.

He's means the largest you can afford! Price goes up exponentially with screen size.
