Noisy battery

Hi all,
I took the batteries off my rib at the end of last season and gave them both a top up charge and left them in the dry all winter, when i went to connect them back up last week i noticed that on one of them there is a constant popping sound coming from an air vent. Any ideas what this might be or if its dangerous to carry on using that battery??? any help much appreciated cheers DT

Maybe an earwig crawled in and is slowly decomposing in the acid....

Had the battery just come of charge it is possible that the battery could still be gassing for sometime after charging and this might explain the noise Alternatively a big short circuit but things start ot get hot then and you might notice a smell instead Des

That is what I mean - can't still be gassing if you charged it that long ago so it just HAS to be an earwig that crawled into the vent a few minutes before you noticed the noise!!!!
