Ofcom EMF consultation
Does anyone understand the latest on this consultation from Ofcom?
They say they are going "vary my licence" -whatever that means, and that in future they won't contact licence holders - we should consult their website regularly instead!
Going to the website has not clarified anything - even tried reading their latest document... so full of abbreviations and technical terms I got nothing out if apart from they are bringing in new rules - undefined as far as I could see to limit EMF exposure, and they are varying licences to account for it - whatever "it" may be. It's page 65 before they start to say what the new rules are - even then I don't understand how it relate to my HH/ fixed VHF!
I'm totally confused and really do wonder why public bodies cannot express their thought / policies in clear simple English - or at least summarise the key points / requirements clearly.
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/asse...ion-update.pdf - good luck with it

Just had the same email and came here to see if anyone had looked in to it.
Better go and look at their website I suppose.

Ah
I might have it wrong, but it looks like they'll be issuing licences based on the power of the equipment you want to use, in bands.
Above 10W is mentioned, which I think doesn't apply to most VHFs in coastal boats, but it means our licences won't be valid for more powerful equipment.

There is a bit on the RYA website plus the consultation suggests they are producing additional guidance for maritime users.
I think the 10W they refer to is a different measurement than the 25W power of a typical fixed VHF.
I'll await a simplified version.

I especially love that Ofcom call it " An Important Communication"- it goes into my Spam folder not my inbox, and they then state there's no guarantee they'll communicate directly with people even on important things in the future, so we should check their website on a regular basis You couldn't make it up!

When one remembers that the primary goal of most big public sector organisations / charities is to keep the gravy train going for all those employed, everything suddenly makes sense.

Ofcom emailed about this consultation
We got the email at our Sailing Club and I had one sent to my personal email. It was so heavily worded using phases that appeared to be those that would be used by a scammer from another country that we made a telephone enquiry with Ofcom and forwarded them the email. After three days they confirmed that it was genuine. The website is totally unclear and I suspect many people will not attempt to comply or fill in whatever it is needs filling in. It wasted an hour or two of my time trying to establish if it was genuine or not. Quite annoying really.

Well, if this is the output of the regulator of the “communications” industry, someone needs to go outside & give their head a shake. It’s a disgrace[emoji849]. Even the link to the website doesn’t work.

Dunno, can’t see how it could be linked to the “you know what” tbh. More likely the ITU, nice try though[emoji6]

Is this what is confusing everyone?

We are proposing to include a specific condition in Wireless Telegraphy Act licences requiring licensees to comply with the ICNIRP Guidelines.

I think the confusion is arising from an email that doesn’t actually say anything. It basically says we’re thinking of doing something but we’re not going to tell you what. If you want to join in the discussion of what we might or might not do, click on this link that doesn’t work. When we’ve decided what we’re not going to do, you can look on our website to see if we’ve done it or not & what you need to do to comply with what we’ve done.. or not.
I hope that’s cleared things up[emoji6]
