Pimp my RIB?
Right, after quite some time pussy footing around, my RIB is getting a stereo.
I like my music and boats so my logic is why the hell not combine the both!!
I've got my stuff from Marine AV and it should be arriving tomorrow.
The head unit is an Aquatic, fully waterproof jobby which is going into a 300w Infinity Amp and on to some Infinity 6x9s.
Has anyone got any advice? I'm gonna try cutting the console with a jigsaw for the speakers, not sure about what to do with the head unit. I may mount it into the side of the console, not on the main steering wheel face. Has anyone else tried this?
What about mounting horisontally under the wheel?
What about in the back of the main console seat?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Chris

Do you have a web address? I am thinking about adding similar things to my boat
Also, when fitting take lots of pictures - I am aiming to setup www.pimpmyrib.co.uk for people to put pictures up of additions they make to there rib, with an easy blog type interface
Cheers
Ben

Benc, your boat is an industrial brown site. Any developments, like adding a stereo (even one that uses cartridges - remember those - no you won't - you're too young) will qualifyfor a government brown site development grant

The web address is HERE
They were very helpful and gave me some decent advice on what was most suitable for my boat.
Nobody got any ideas on where to mount my head unit?

SODS LAW
I've been to the boat this lunch time to have a look and typical, in order to get the stereo under the steering wheel, the wheel itself and the whole steering assembly will need to come of! If anybody thinks I'm doing that they can **** off!
Side of the console it is then!!!

nice to see somone else blinging their boat up a bit with sounds, i have the same head unit and a 250w sony amp, going to fit another two speakers next week when they arrive as its nice to have some music on the move at times
your console is packed so not sure where would be reasonable but i expect you have seen the space it needs behind already.
the aquatic system is great and very chuffed here
let us know how you get on

the template with the aquatic is fine, identify where you want to mount it, make sure sufficient room behind, mark up where the template will fit etc, double check then drill a 6 or8mm hole in each corner
then with the jigsaw cut into the middle of the cutout section to see what damage to the edges the blade does , set it for very little cutting forward motion if yours has that feature, if you are happy it cuts cleanly then join up the 4 holes cutting right to the edge of templated hole to save on the clean up after
last night i cut out and fitted an icom 421, switch unit, garmin 178c, a tacho in a friends console using this process, take it slow and careful and you will be fine
use masking tape to protect the surrounding area from the foot of the jigsaw
i am presuming you have not done this before so wanted to pass on some info to hopefully make it easier
keep the supply for the stereo separate from your vhf and chartplotter if you can

I thought about a stereo on mine, - It was an addition the Mrs suggested when we spec'ed it out. We were quoted about £225 for one fitted, but the thing that stopped me was thinking along the lines of 25 knots in a breeze, wave noise against the hull & tunes on at a level where you can hear them, may be I'd not be able to hear the VHF ?
Is there some way to interface the 2, so for example if a channel 16 or other GMDSS safety announcement from HMC etc come over the VHF, could the CD / Radio be muted, so you didnt miss the VHF communication ? - Similar to the RDS function with traffic news on your car radio / mobile phone. The stereo mutes and preference is given to the news / safety announcement.
Not being technically gifted I told her she can only listen to Terry Wogan / Radio 4 - when she's alone in her car....... I've got an appointment to have the object she inserted removed in July..... Just glad it wasnt a boat.

Just a hint, but if you use a laminate cutting blade on your jigsaw (meant for kitchen worktops) then you wont get chipping on the top side. They cut on the down stroke so as not to damage the finished surface.

Right the stereo is in and working.
Speakers are the next thing. I did buy a 300w amp and some matching 6x9 speakers but after looking into where I can actually place them I've had to send them back.
I've now ordered some "bullet" ones to go on the a frame. No drilling, jigsawing just alan keys!
Pics when its all done!

Jigsawing
Carefull if you do use a jigsaw, i know a guy who unknowingly cut through his hydraulic steering pipes when attacking the console with power tools. Hydraulic fluid makes a real mess inside the console!!!
