portable navtex

one of these waiting for me at home

WIB2D

looking forwards to reading about all the dead whales and missing bouys - I don't know where else you owuld ever go to be able to pick up that kind of information? The fact this is battery or mains/12v powered was the selling point for me; keep it at home and take it with me when I go out

will advise any findings of interest about the device

I have a Navtex at home, but the reception is very flaky & the messages are so corrupt they are unreadable, so I gave it up as a bad job. We are 70 miles from the sea so that might account for the poor reception, you might have better luck in Eastbourne Let us know how you get on.

yay it works

I'm also a way from the sea at the moment - in Wimbledon, the lower end. I switched it on and 10 minutes later had a few messages from Hamburg about the weather and a light vessel having been temporarily removed. Another 10 minutes and it is plugged into my PC feeding the software on that, I have screened out all except Cullercoats and Portpatrick for the device but on the PC I can see everything.

So my only concerns now are longevity (it is not waterproof) and how well the 3 day battery life holds up in a year or two

And remembering the abbreviations so I can even understand what is being said...

Meh now it doesn't work. Seems like the battery won't charge any more. Very expensive if that is the normal level of reliability.

Doubt they designed their own battery so would expect it has a commercial part inside?

3years on trickle charging... NiMH?

You should be able to replace the battery, but check the charger first!!
