Poverty Spec Data logger

I've been tinkering with a DIY 'poverty-spec' data logger.

It looks like this:

And records GPS data, FishFinder Data, Accelerometer data.

Out in my hard-boat today (Rib too far away and no FishFinder) I managed to get some data logged. A few data point were lost when one of the connectors started to get a bit wonky

The plan is to convert it to KML ("Google Earth") at some point.

(Out of the River Arun and westwards)

(Not yet converted to 'g'. About 1/3 of the way I throttle back and the acceleration is just due to the swell)

The plan is to convert this to KML at some point....

Don't ask me "why" - 'It seemed a good idea at the time'.

Now THAT, is without any shadow of a doubt, the best (or worst) case of too much time on your hands Kudos for actually building it though

No, that's very cool. A friend of mine does that kind of thing and uses the results for very accurate and useful benthic surveys. He gets PAID for the results!

Of course, he's nukkin futs too, but hey!

This is quite neat, good job

I have been looking for a cheap accelerometer for a while, it would be very interesting to see what G we pull when going along, especially after the I think 10,000 recordings of 10G+ on day 1 of the Venture Cup that Cinzano recorded!

Anyone know of a cheap & simple one?

Now with KML...

(Red / gray = Speed
Orange line = depth under keel
'Teeth' = heading)

This sort of thing has always interested me, especially when integrated into some form of crowd sourcing system where poorly charted areas eventually get fully covered and are kept up to date. Keep it up!

Yeah, cool. Now all you've got to do is a load more passes to the left and right of your track to cover the other bits!

Olex has been around a long time & does exactly this, it's a commercial product & ain't cheap, a full system is about 10 grand It is VERY impressive though. Users upload their data & share it with other users, the result is that you get very detailed topographical maps of the sea floor, as long as you're in an area that's been well covered. I've seen it in operation on dive boats combined with a multibeam sonar & the detail is incredible.

What's wrong with a plumb line for Loch Lomond? I seem to remember the AA missing it out of their maps completely!

(By losing the LCD I've got it into a smaller case now).

And the speed plots more neatly...

It depends on your definition of simple, but this one is cheap and works very well:

A nice build!
There are some folk doing exactly that - providing nmea data loggers free in certain circumstances- then processing the depth, position and time information for tidal correction: averaging etc, in order produce crowdsourced charts, Kal overlays etc

(I'm not affiliated, just interested)

It's always nicer to do it yourself though!
