power tilt & trim pump.

Hi, Is there any way of testing the hydraulic pump on mercury Three ram system power T & T c 1990. ( square motor ) I can test the motor but not the pump, I have read, "if the pump is faulty it must be replaced" But how do I tell if the pump is faulty ??? cheers, Colin....
