Radar
Any opinions on fitting Radar to RIB?
Looked at Lowrance Broadband Radar today to add to HDS 8 I ordered a couple of weeks ago, if it ever arrives!
Does any one have any experience with this system?
Thanks.

According to the dealer the broadband radar just plugs in to the HDS unit.
I tried the dome on the A frame and its not as big as I thought, doesn't look too big any way, they also have a stainless frame for the all round white that curves round the dome.
We'll see.......

I have radar, at the time it was an extravagance, but now I wouldn't be without it. If it has MARPA capability, all the better. Mine is conventional, not broadband or digital. The HD systems are even better, similar to going from ordinary sonar to structure scan.

Pikey Dave, is this your rib?

If it is, do you have any pictures of the top of the A frame?

It'll be common place soon enough, top marks to Lowrance for getting in there. Getting the cost of the radome will be where the battle will be fought.

AFAIK "Broadband" radar is only good for short ranges, which on a RIB isn't a problem due to the mounting height. The best I can reliably get is about 6-8 miles in good conditions & depending on the target. Things like cliffs & storms show up at about 10 miles, container ships & other big stuff are good for about 6-8 miles. Small boats & RIBs etc, 2-3 miles. It's handy when you're diving as you can target the big stuff with MARPA & keep an eye on it.

Blimey - that's a setup and a half
I bet you show up on radar... "XO, we have a large tanker on the starboard bow and closing at 45 knots, any ideas?"

deck to base of scanner platform is about 2.2m, just enough to stop your brain from frying if you're stood directly in front. That won't be a problem with the broadband as they aren't supposed to cook your head.

Yes there supposed to have very low levels of head cooking on the model I'm looking at.
My A frame sits quite high, was just wondering if I'd get away with the height if I went for same set up you have, with reflector below dome.
Your set up looks fantastic but I don't think I could get away with the extra height. Going to nip down to the marina soon and get measuring.
Thanks for picture.

I've been drivin' all night, my hand's wet on the wheel. There's a voice in my head that drives my heel. It's my baby callin', says I need you here and it's half past four and I'm shifting gear.

Random question of the day.
If you have one of these whizzy broadband radars set on short range, and you stand up, can you see your head on the radar?

A short trip sat on a rear pod of Jigsaw (ex-Bedajim), would result in the impression of a radar in the back of the head.
