Radio and Ariel

am i stupid or obviously missing the point totally ?!?!?! :-( I have had a few different boats and fitted most the equipment and never had a problem.
the dive club i am in has just bought a new rib so i am now after a new (ish) engine, chartplotter and VHF.

there is one bloke at the club that insists that it is hard to fit a radio and have the ariel tuned to the radio! every package i have bought ive put together and its been excellent no issues with transmission or usability, he does like to make things more awkward than they are and thinks he is the only person that knows this black magic !!!

all i have done is connected them together and like magic they work !?!?

Phil

As long as the aerial is a Marine VHF Antenna then it is just "plug and play"

a good bit of SWR'ing I seem to remember, I still think I've got a Standing Wave Ratio meter kicking around the house .. however I've not read anywhere about having to swarr (SWR) in a marine ariel, maybe they become pre swared these days, or the frequency we're looking at doesnt require it ...

It quite funny reading people's comments on radio and antenna issues when you've been a ham for 25 years.

You're either not married or have a very understanding wife!

No, my neighbours don't like the tower or the antenna but since I have full planning permission there's not much they can do about it. The tower can be raised to 40ft.

Yes, the antenna rotates; I have flown a flag from it in the past but have not hung any washing.

I don't talk to aliens but in the last week or so I have had contacts with Pitcairn Island, South Shetland Islands, Malpelo Islands and the Congo.

I'm happily married to Mrs GJ0KYZ (her of roly poly fame). Actually she doesn't mind my radio hobby at all. However, going out in the boat in rough weather is another matter entirely...

It's hard(ish) to build your own aerial and tune it to the frequency but you won't need to do too much to use an off the shelf one

An SWR meter is useful to troubleshoot problems (high SWR indicates a problem) but if everything is new you shouldn't have any...
