Radio transmitting problem.

Not sure how much of a problem this could be as I was on my drive when testing.
After hearing a lot of traffic on the VHF today I gave Humber coastguard a radio test call, they said I was weak and unreadable.
I am aware of the different watts on the radio so could this be the issue ? I live about 1 mile from the sea and have a descent ariel which is on a 4ft pole?!?,?,
All connections and equipment seem to be fine.

Any ideas ?

Did you transmit from home to them or from the sea to them?

Where is the mast?

What power?

ah, the black art of radios i sometimes get better reception on my handheld than the fixed set check your connections, especially at the plugs, are there any dry un-soldered joints? is it a marine antenna you have, or is it a home made one?

If there is a nearby building between you and the CG receiver aerial then that would be enough to block the signal and make it unreadable.
