It all depends on the sea conditions. Get the old SR bobbing about on some waves and those light brackets will be bouncing about like Katie Price on a trampoline.

KY - another not of caution before you (or anyone else) goes adding a couple of metres of steel to there a-frame... ...check the rule book - i'm pretty sure the greater than 2.5m part only applies to vessels over 12m long.

KY, gonna stick in me 2p's worth for what it's worth... probably 2p.
Although the 1mtr separation is the rule, I can't say I've ever had any difficulty seeing or identifying a wee boat with less separation because of the the lack of separation. It needs to be above head height tho.
Your spot lights are silly, a bit harsh sounding but at sea there is nothing for the light to reflect back from as there is on land. The light will bounce off the water and continue on its way shining at the sky. They will totally destroy your night vision, even your instruments will do this unless they dim very low and I mean VERY low. The lights may be useful in harbour if there's no other lighting and as deck lights but rather more light than necessary. They will however frighten the seagulls from the water and preventing you running them down. Seriously.
Your active antenna will not make you a target as big as a tanker but perhaps you were just having fun and being a wee bit facetious.
Don't ask me how I know these things....

Thanks JW - the spots are really for deck lights as we would like to do some night fishing at some point - to be honest I had'nt really thought of using them whilst going along but I think the points you have raised along with some of the others regarding their effectiveness is important - thank you - so please don't apologise for your two pennies
Had no idea seagulls could be an issue either
The Active X comment was slightly tongue in check - I just hope it makes us slightly more visable than our previous install - which was nothing
Anyway how do you know all this........

KY, heres a very sketchy picture of what Zub was trying to say.
Your lights should be - red/green sidelights visible from the bow to 22.5 degrees behind the beam (red on port side, green on starboard side). These should be visible for 1 nm. Then there should be an all round white light visible for 2 nm which should be mounted at least 1m above the coloured lights. So if I am aproaching from dead ahead I see red and green together with white above and "know" it is the bow of a powerboat. If I am approaching from your starboard side I see green with white above it and know it is the starboard side of a powerboat. If I am coming from astern then I'll just see a white light and it could be a powerboat from behind (or several other possibilities!).
The problem is if I am approaching from the side of your boat the spotlights and radar reflector are shadowing the all round white light so there is a good chance I only see a green (or red) light. That makes you appear to be a sailing vessel. Its technically wrong, the rules make some allowance for it but not as much as you have your white light obscured, and you could fix it by putting the all round white on a longer pole above the a frame.
