I've got the SH GX1500e and a Garmin 551S chatting to each other quite happily.
Which cables have you joined up?

I've configured the GX1500e to a few Garmin GPS units over the last few years and they've all worked fine. On some Garmin units, you have to set the Output to NMEA. Sorry, but I don't have the 551s manual handy at the moment. If you have the manual for yours there, it should say how to do this.

As DHD says, check the output is set to NMEA and not Garmin's own communication set. It is easy enough to find in the settings menu.

The other plug on the back of the unit is for NMEA2000.
I'll have a look at the unit later and let you know how it's configured.

Ok, the NMEA connections are blue to blue and grey to brown, with the green to batt -ve.
In the Garmin menu system, under 'Communications', Serial Port 1 is set to 'NMEA Std', Serial Port 2 to 'None' : See pic
Working on through the menu, under 'Garmin', all 3 options are set to 'ON', again, see pic.
Hope this helps.
