Shakespear Dorsal Antenna

I have a bit of a "packaging challenge" on my hardboat, trying to find a location to install & an aerial that is adequate and not just going to get damaged all the time. I don't have a roof, console, a-frame etc, so the aerial has to be mounted on the deck or the engine hatch, really.

Does anyone have experience of the Shakespear Dorsal antenna? I like the robust & low profile packaging so it's not going to get ripped off, caught in mooring lines etc.

Matt hi

You know the answer to this one already of course.
It's not the Antenna itself that will limit performance, but the height at which it's installed.

Antenna tech has moved on rapidly in recent years and I'm already considering one of these for my RIB instead of buying yet another Rib Raider and waiting for it to fail.
But of course mine would be atop an A Frame.

My thoughts re the design are that I have a similar size and shape one on my car, fitted from the factory which enables me, should I wish, to watch all Freeview TV channels on any of the numerous screens in the car.
Passengers have done so whilst on the move and have reported an excellent picture quality with no interruptions.
Something that just couldn't have happened just a few years ago with a similar design.

Agreed - very aware that I don't have anything high up to install it on. But if I put a big aerial on the deck, I am convinced it'll be a liability and get broken - which is no help either. Being realistic, cruising round the solent is my thing, so I think limited range is acceptable - I will give it a go. Currently only have a handheld, so "anything" should be an upgrade.

You probably need a nice new VHF too.

Matt

Well, I've ordered one to replace the RibRaider fitted 3yrs ago that has now rusted so badly when I 'pinged it' it stayed bent.

Will let you know how I get on.

I have to admit, I have been procastinating about where to mount my aerial.
Only one chance to drill a hole in the right place. So still rocking the handheld at the moment until where I decide to drill the aerial hole.
I think I am veering towards the engine hatch since that'd be an easier to fill & repaint if I changed my mind. But I dunno....
