Sharing Map Over NMEA?
My new console will have twin Garmin plotters and will be connected over a N2k network. Will the plotters be able to share a G2 Vision card if I had a card in just one of the plotters?

You normally have to use a flavour of Ethernet between the plotters in addition to the N2k network. The N2k is a CAN network, low bandwidth for sharing simple data. Raymarine use Seatalk NG, I think Lowrance use a proprietary Ethernet cable. You can link 2 plotters simply with a cable between them, this allows you to share charts, sonar etc between the units. If you start adding black box radar/sonar etc. you need a router.
What models of plotter do you have?

Ethernet is the stumbling block, the second plotter doesn’t have an Ethernet port. hence my hoping that the info could be shared over nmea.

I had a feeling that was the case. Not to worry, it’s the plotter on the wifes side so not that much of a problem.

If mine is anything to go by, you'd be better off trying to stream I'm a celebrity* over NMEA.

You could print & laminate this & stick it on the screen to keep her happy

Are you talking about N2k or 0183?

When I said 'mine' I was referring to my wife rather than my NMEA network. PD's idea was simpler however.

At the risk of being shot down (and i havnt proved it either way yet ) i have a garmin 750 with no sonar which i plan to nmea2k with engine data and a small 451s with transducer and depth and fish ,and have been told by the boffins i will be able to see sonar on the larger 750 as well as on the 451s .......i will be trying this within the next week as i too need to know ..........surely its just going to be a twin helm setup however both my units have inbuilt maps

My bad, misread sonar for radar for some reason.

You’ll be able to see depth over N2k as this is a simple data packet. I doubt very much (though happy to be proven wrong), that you’ll be able to share a sonar trace (picture) as this is a graphic. So your Slave unit will show digital depth in feet/metres/fathoms, but not the bottom trace.

I originally thought I could run an Airmar transducer on one of my units and share with the other plotter but alas that’s not possible over NMEA. It also requires Ethernet. I can see a new “2nd” plotter with Ethernet on the horizon.

Yes I agree with these thoughts ,i think this is more likely to be the outcome !, but i will try it when it warms up a little and report ,busy with some boat upholstery at the moment
