Ships radio license

Do I need a ships radio license in a RIB? My understanding is that if the VHF is permanently installed one needs a ships radio license but just wondering if that applies to a RIB.

Hi and welcome to the forum Ian.

Yes you need a licence from Ofcom for the installation. I just have a handheld and that has a different licence. Of course you need you personal operators licence too.

Ok, thanks. I've bought second hand and want to get the DSC all up to date. My understanding is that I first need a ships radio license in order to then get my MMSI number. The previous owner hadn't entered an MMSI number

Yes, if it's a fixed set to be permanently mounted in your RIB then you'll be allocated an MMSI as part of your Ship's Radio Licence application, if you tick the DSC box.
