Sony Cd player - CDX R35MR - problems

Have now fixed nav lights , decklights , speakers , but the damn head unit seems to have an intermittent fault. Have checked power & seems fine, but sometimes it works , sometimes not !

Am assuming black is -ve & red is +ve - . 4 sets speaker wires . What is the yellow ?? What the hell are all the others? I've got a wired remote on the console so that plugs in fine. Any ideas / experiance . Once I've got this sorted just the bilge pumps to work out. ( and read the 100 pages of plotter/ radio guides & remember how to work them! )

Hi

Yellow is often a signal wire used to mute the ICE head unit in a car if the phone rings in a fully fitted phone car kit.

WRONG

yellow is ignition live! as used to tell the unit to switch on when u turn your keys! the red holds the memory of your stations cd position etc

mute etc is blue with white stripe!!

In every car kit I've fitted the yellow has been the Mute.
thats both Nokia and Motorola.

Perhaps I should have said yellow from the Car kit.

Checked out the sony site & Yellow is defiantely the perm +ve for memory etc . Red is Switched +ve .

Yellow - Not much use when you turn the main battery switches off as it 'forgets everything however it is wired. Its all slighly academic now its defiantley bust - took it off the boat & set it up on the bench at home - nothing ! Checked power is definately getting in & the fuse is OK. I just need to get a direct replacment & its a 5 min job to rewire. Kids even go tme new Cds to listen to when I'm out !

I've wired in loads of these and yes yellow is for the memory in the unit to retain radio presets and sound settings. As you say, not alot of good on a boat when you isolate the battery. I always wire the red and yellow in together and there should be a facility on the the sony loom to do this as standard, ie a double female bullet.

Halfords do a memory saver which plugs into the cigarette lighter (if fitted) and gives feed to retain stereo memory/code if you are that worried.

So - no sign of a direct replacment - purchased another Sony marine unit - 3 hours use & died ! I'm thinking this can only be due to the pounding it gets ( got on Saturday especailly on the way back from IOW) . Does anyone have a cd player/ radio fitted that has been reliable for a considerabel length of time. I cant spend £100 a week on the things ! I've checked the wiring - voltage supply etc & all seesm fine. I thought hey should run fine form any 12v battery ?

Really now am thinking I either forget the whole idea, or get somehting very reliable ,or pay some one to fit it so when it stops they can replace it again & again & again.............

What about going the MP3 or 4 route. I know you would have to patch the current hole, but,no moving parts to break. Just a thought.

Have got the ipod , but felt that the best bet would be to run that through std marine cd/ radio to the speakers for amplification & remote etc. All set up - got the position all sorted just keep breaking the head units ! Maybe they just dont like 30kts & coming back to the water with force every 5 seconds . Both sony units have taken about an hours worth before going intermittent & then pack up 10 mins later ! Does anyone else have / had this problem ? With any marine CD player ? Even the radios have packed up so no moving parts in them, and its definately not getting wet .
