Standard Horizon HX851E

My one used or have experience with the above VHF.
Seems to be the only handheld with DSC.
Thinking of getting one.
Any thoughts?

I'm going to order a HX851E next week. You can get them for under £200 on the interweb. Far cheaper than Icom's new DSC h-h and slightly higher power output as well.

Would be grateful if you could let me know where you get one from and how much.

Any one else got any views on this VHF.

That i-com is a bit over budget

A friend has one and is pleased. He bought it at the London Boat Show and was the only one available at the time. As stated above, Icom have one out now and had a prototype at the show but was more expensive.

I found it a bit chunky for a hand held but when you think about all that is crammed in there, it's not going to be a as small as the non DSC handhelds (maybe in a few years they will!).

With all the features they have, I think battery life would be my main consern.

Dave.

I have one of these and it is great.

Battery life also pretty good IF you turn the GPS side of things off. I'm using the rechargeable ones and i am very happy.

Saying that, having the GPS is well handy and, obviously, sends your location automatically with auto DSC distress if you hold down the big red button.

Have also had it floating about so, yes, it is waterproof, to 1m or something.
