Thickie question on Garmin map cards
The new barge will have a Garmin GPSmap 556s fitted. I think I am going to wait and see what the installed maps/charts are like (unless anybody can set a waypoint on one, navigate to it and take a photo for me...) but I expect them to be crap in which case I will need to get a chart card.
Garmin do a couple of South America charts which include the Falklands which is an option on a microSD/SD and a "Garmin card" (whatever that is?) here https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?...640&pvID=34953 (doesn't seem to be the option to select whether you want SD or microSD though)
Looking at the manual for the 556 it says it uses SD, which is not the same as microSD ... and in some photos I remember seeing of the 556 (which I now can't find) I am sure it looked like it had a mini or microSD rather than "normal SD" but at that price I don't want to order the wrong one... or maybe it can actually take both? I think you can get an adapter from microSD to SD but I figure in a marine environment that is probably something better avoided.
What do I need please?

Normal SD. Yes there are adapters and yes I think they should be avoided unless you want to use the card in a handheld as well as your fixed unit.

Thanks
If I get a handheld it will just be a basic one something like a GPS72 for backup and to de-clutter the sounder screen so will be no need for the card to fit that.

Dragging this one up again.
Now I have established that Garmin's idea of a "worldwide basemap" is complete poo (each pixel is about a mile square...) I need to get a SD chart card covering the Falklands.
The chart I need is the Chile & Falkland Islands one:
010-C0896-20 Garmin Bluechart G2 - HXSA006R - Chile & Falkland Island
Any ideas where I can track down one of these in the UK please? Can any of the UK based RIBnet trade members help with this? The only suppliers I can find are in the States and that is no use as it will probably never arrive, but I suppose you can buy them in the UK.

There might be some cheap ones kicking about in Buenos Aires (surplus stock) they might need updating though as they could be 20 years or so out of date

Blimey, you're right, time flies.
Sooo, apart from the niggles with the sounder, how's the boat, or have you already posted this in another thread?
