David I did have a look at the engine and the bits you pointed out, made very slight difference, so I imagine it’s about as loose as it will get at the moment. Maybe when I’ve been using it a while it’ll loosen up a bit. I too would be interested to know where to put a return spring. I ordered the tachometer today so might need your advice again soon when it arrives.

The only place I could see for a return spring just looking quickly was a spare hole on a lug on that black "spindle" that rotates when pulled by the cables. But the nuisance is it rotates to a degree where the spring will really only work for the upper 2/3rds of the throttle travel.

Having never had an outboard before I’m sure I’ll just get used to how it is at the moment. Just wondering if some sort of spring could be put on the tiller shaft.

I think options under the cowl would be easier. I mean it's not something I'll get hung up about but after the silky smooth throttle feel of the Yamaha 15 this one is a bit rough feeling. When I have nothing else to do I may well take the tiller to carb cables off and lubricate them.
