Vhf dsc

A recent purchase of mine is a standard horizon gx2200e vhf DSC radio
Uninstalled at present, on looking at the manual I read that for a flush dash mount it might have a problem picking up the satellites due to being covered somewhat

My question is has anyone had a problem in an open type boat as we are quite exposed without a cabin

A bracket is supplied but I would rather a dash mount

You will have no problems picking up the sats, it's just a manufacturer's way to cover himself (in the case you mount it on an alu or steel boat).

Your rigid structure is GPR, a fiberglass with resin which will not stop your VHF from a good reception.

I have a sailboat that had a 20 years old Garmin sitting inside, with GPS antennae (on the same bracket as the chartplotter, not outside). The reception is 100%
I changed this one for a Furuno 1670F, with fishfinder

The radio came with a surface mount bracket and the clamps for flush mounting were an optional extra so I guess surface mount is a preferable first choice as far as standard horizon are concerned

Am I expecting too much for these to be included in the price

Have a close physical look at the back of the case-my SH GX1600E for example didn't come with flush mounts, but it can be screw flush mounted to a console without them and it's a better job than their flush mounts.

Hence why it's screwed in

All I can see are the side holes for a surface mount bracket, I have ordered the optional brackets at £9.50 it's like paying for parking!

Aren't the flush mounts just flat plastic with slots set so when you bolt them onto the existing holes you slide them forward to press on the underside of dash etc gripping the dash in the process

Icom units come with little plastic ones that are not great - they then sell you a metal set that you actually screw in and makes a much better hold - for twenty quid.................

Flush mount kit comes free with the much maligned Cobras. Never had a problem with them.

This unit replaces a cobra that rendered itself defunct
But as I say they should come with kit for all options

We've got a GX1700e which has inbuilt GPS, it's flush mounted in a console and never fails to get a good GPS signal.
