It all depends on what you want to do with the GPS, the VHF will give you your current position in lat/lon, it might even have rudimentary navigational capabilities e.g course to steer from your current position to a waypoint stored in the VHF. It will be a faff to use it as such & would be no substitute for a plotter. The main reason for adding GPS to VHF was to eliminate the need for an external GPS feed to the radio for the DSC facilities.
