Do you mean somewhere where you can listen to marine VHF radio traffic via the internet so you can compare with the radio? That won't help compare volumes since your PC is going to have a volume control...

I'm guessing when he said quiet he meant volume of traffic rather than decibels. Not that vhf on line is going to help their either as different mast locations (and heights etc) will hear different things.

Indeed. I'd like to be able to listen to local channels so I can compare traffic. Such as Solent coastguard etc. As if I had another radio in my hand or a scanner. I downloaded a scanner app, however it was mostly am radio and the closest station on vhf was Wiltshire area.

I think you'll find that rebroadcasting marine VHF transmissions on t'internet is illegal - so any source is likely to be very QT.

Ahh... That makes much more sense!

Perhaps if you are really concerned that you're missing traffic you could borrow/hire another handheld for a few hours and do a comparison?

There used to be a site that broadcast Marine Radio via the internet from an aerial in Ryde. He ran for years, but has recently given up.

You can receive VTS. But it would be unusual in the Solent on a weekend not to be receiving a chain of Radio Checks.

DSC Radio? It probably has a check function - does it play OK?

You should be able to do a radio check with the CG on 67 - but thats on a suitably selected mast and so may not be that representative of any issues. A better test would be CoastWatch at Calshot Tower on 65 (Callsign Callshot NCI). Even that is probably quite antenna as its presumably on the tower. You could also try Lee on Solent CoastWatch if you are aiming to test distance.

I'm pretty close to the sea so I'll try some radio checks. I understand ch16 radio checks are not welcomed anymore?
