What did you try?

I've not connected a Garmin, but it was pretty straightforward to connect my Lowrance. The manual will tell you the wiring colours which you will connect something like this:

Garmin NMEA (data) OUT +ve ----------- SH NMEA IN +ve
Garmin NMEA (data) OUT -ve ----------- SH NMEA IN -ve
(if either of those are missing then its just the "black" ground wire)

Then set the Garmin to output NMEA.

If they both offer it then you can connect data in the other direction too.

Also both my Garmin handhelds offer a varity of data speeds. (I assume therefore that yours will too) Might be worth having a dig in the submenus to see if either the garmin or the SH are set to a different baud rate.

Also I think the Garmins come defaulting to "Garmin Speak" - (What Poly said about NMEA). I have the minor hassle of swapping the output every time I go to download my trails as the Garmin is set to "NMEA" for the boat and needs to be set to "Garmin for the PC....
