What external speakers for ICOM ic M71/72?

I'm after bit of advice on what external speakers to get for a handheld VHF set. It's my only VHF and I'd like to have it in my jacket in case I'm overboard, but also to use easily for general use (patrol boat duties).

I've had the ICOM M32 which didn't have an external speaker, and found that I couldn't hear it if it was in a pocket, or if it was attached to the boat, defeated the purpose of a handheld. So I sold it before realising how bloodly expensive the upgrade to the M72 (M71 in the UK) was! Could have brought a fixed set for the cost difference.

Anyway, the hand set choices are a HM125 water proof speaker/handset at large expense, or non waterproof headsets which I'm guessing can be replaced cheaply with generics once you have the connector.

Is one system better than the other in day to day use?

Thanks in advance

I have the HM 125. Must admit I am not impressed with it. Its ridiculously large and actually quieter than the handset.

But it is waterproof and allows you to speak in to it without dragging the handset to your mouth.

In my opinion the cheaper non waterproof mikes have no place on a RIB. Especially if you want to use it in an emergency when your in the water.

If you want to save money and have a fully waterproof system go for the Standard Horizon HX 370 and handset.

That's next on my list.

What was I thinking??

Thanks Biggles, thats helpful,

I'd not thought through the problem of being in the water or in trouble with a non waterproof mike. Was totally focussed on it working when on the move.

I'd hoped that the handset would be better than that, but I'm happy that my father is now a lot safer with a hand held - he does lots of single handed yachting - and I'll just bite the bullet and spend the $.

Thanks
