I am pleased with my Icom M91D. Have not used it in anger but seems to last far longer than advertised in standby - day and half use just scanning so probably 12-15 hours.
I got mine at London boatshow for £225 plus 5 year warranty. May be worth waiting for Southampton?
Think there may be a new 92D model out now.
Only downsides are its quite big (but not too big) compared with others radios that I have seen and minor info on screen can be a bit 'small' under some conditions.

I personally prefer the user interface if the icom m91d - very very easy to use and share interface with the 423 and 323 fix radios.
I have used both - but I have training radios for m91d and M323 ...

I went for the Icom M91d with the spare battery, only used it once but did use a full battery in a days boating.

I often use mine for generally scanning the airwaves and found that my battery lasts a day and a bit. I recon I get 13-14 hours from full charge, although its not been used for transmission during that time but does regularly pick up quite a bit of traffic.
My only negative of the Icom 91d is the variance on the SOG makes it useless for adhering to speed limits - one second you are a knot or so under, next a knot over. Don't know if later versions of the s/w have better GPS filtering so smooth this.

I have a SH HX750E. Seems OK. Used frequently for listening, rarely for transmitting, but it works well then. Switched on for three/four hours a day, it's still got plenty of power after five days.
Most important advice is... get one that floats .

Both Icom & SH offer good quility, but for the DSc handhled s a quick google is showing ICOM at £250 and SH at £190....thats a big differance for essentially the same thing . Icom some 31% more costly - or £60 to spend on something else 'boaty'.
I'm not sure ICOM aren't trading off the brand a little on this one.

or SH are reduced since they made there money beating ICOM to market place...
as I said before I like the fact - both fixed sets and portable use the same menu system - and the new interface is easy to use.
£60 =less 2 tanks of fuel for me
