I wonder in really rough conditions, when flooding is most likely, how well you can keep a big enough air pocket to keep the terminals dry?
But surely any attempt to seal a battery chamber to avoid immersion during an accidental flooding would do the same
Therefore either a sealed battery is required or a battery with a capillary drain vent would be required in either case
I agree with Pikey Dave that a battery high up or well forward would be best but it's not always practical

I actually fried a battery last year because I forgot to lift the elephants trunk when I left my little rib overnight

I'm sure something along the lines of what I'm trying to describe would have saved my battery

I'm planning on making something but it's a bit down the to do list yet

Not if the box was vented above the flooded waterline (top of tubes or height of transom). Or you seal it with a gas permeable but water tight membrane at the top - but that might be getting a bit fancy!

Oh I dunno, a bit of goretex from an old coat would do it, especially given the size of the H2 molecule. I recon a bit of plastic tube fitted into the high point of the battery box & secured up high would solve the argument problem

All my batteries have been in regular boxes with the base level with the tube top if it floods then you've sunk

Goretex not such a crazy idea!
