Wiring electrics to tiller outboars

Hi all,

Recently brought a 2009 Mariner 40hp 4 Stroke Tiller outboard for my 5metre Sib, I have a chart plotter,VHF & a few other small electrical appliances I need to run l. My question is how easy it is to run these off the engine and what/how would I go about doing it? Any diagrams or books of interest that would be of help to me if anyone can suggest any would be appreciated. Also how easy would it be for a novice like me to wire up?

Thanks

Matt

Assuming that engine has a charging circuit (I'd imagine it probably does) it's simply a case of connecting a battery to the two terminals on the engine. You can then run whatever you want off the battery; these will need to be fused either with inline fuses on the +ve wire, or through a small fuse/breaker box/panel.

In terms of how easy, doesn't get much easier than this. Very basic wiring.

Yup[emoji106] I’ve just gone through this exact scenario with a brand new Suzi 20hp manual start/tiller steer. The Suzuki sales bumf states that this engine has an alternator output of 6-12A available for battery charging. What it doesn’t say is that you need to fit an additional charging kit at about £100. So I’ve fitted the kit, pretty straightforward technically, but awkward as buggery in the fiddly dept. As I wanted to keep the weight/bulk down, I went for a 20Ah lithium battery, this won’t charge directly from the 12V engine regulator, so I fitted a dedicated Buck regulator for the battery, this was about £10 of Amazon. All in all the whole project was around £180 including the battery & a lot of cursing.
