Hmmm. The reporting (as usual) is lousy. I guess he had been using MarineTraffic for navigation? Probably didn't get the updated position of the ferry. The ferry captain is in real trouble - all the tools at hand and hit a slow boat in fog!!

Yup, you have to read through the crap reporting, but at the end of the day a very experienced seafarer put to Sea in dodgy conditions in a notoriously difficult stretch of water. The fact the the 2 boats manned by "professionals" hit each other at all just makes the story worse.
I'd assumed he was using Navionics or similar app.

I did too - but on reflection it wouldn't have given rise to the WiFi story - losing the data feed to MarineTraffic would explain both being out in fog AND hitting something

Well I'm nosy so I asked MAIB what app it was. They have replied iSailor installed on the iPad, tethered by WiFi to a phone.
I presume the tether was fine, but the phone lost 3G.
iSailor can have charts but free version doesn't from what I understand. I'm assuming the carts are "installed" rather than downloaded live.
I didn't ask if the pad had a GPS on board etc.

So anyone without wifi or Gps is deemed an idiot if they head out to sea these days. Lets hope the US don't hit the kill switch on there satellites or we will all start crashing into each other both land and sea!!!!
Us humans have been sinking boats (even ships) since we first went to sea, we are experts at it

Nope! But before GPS, we had sailors with proper navigation skills. What GPS has done is allow the idiots onto the water who shouldn't be there. Notwithstanding that this bloke was actually a Humber Pilot, who should be able to navigate his home waters with his eyes shut. It's like the opinions expressed on the AIS thread, fill the boat with electronics & you think you're idiot proof, the problem is the idiot using 'em[emoji849]
Just sayin[emoji6]

Not sure what you got that from? A paper chart, some basic navigation skills* (and who knows perhaps the sense not to go out in fog with dodgy lights, and no sound signals) and they could have been fine - although in fog a radar reflector might have been a good idea, and when comms weren't working well with VTS perhaps revising the plan, especially in poor vis!
* Log, compass, dead reckoning, perhaps supported with soundings - although other than exam situations I doubt that is normal on any mobo these days.

Here in Norway this is a problem. Summer and winter people seems to trust their smartphones with GPS and all the apps. It`s not very vice. They get lost in the mountains and at sea.
During summer lots of turist rents smal fishing boats. Trusting their phones they think they are safe. They are not. They get lost when theres is no internett connection or the battery runs out. They may have engine trouble, fall overboard, drinks too many beers, don`t understand the weather, and generally don`t understand that the people trying to rescue them also put themselves in danger.
It`s a mess, and some politicians calls for regulations.

I think you will find there is no mention of "Wi-Fi or GPS" in the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea
